The recent resurgence of interest in liminal spaces has been delightful to experience. Liminality is a concept I fell in love with a few years ago when it occupied a small, yet captivating corner of the internet. Seeing liminal elements and aesthetics used in cinema and other arts also helped fuel this passion. Having only a vague definition, the word liminal is described as a transitional, temporal phase or place. This fluid definition gives way for many unique interpretations of this fascinating concept of liminality to run free. 'Creepy' and 'abandoned' tend to be easy ways to describe liminal spaces and while we certainly often see those elements in a liminal space, they are much more complex under the surface. Subliminally. Often having a sort of dream-like appearance, liminal spaces seem to speak the language of our subconscious mind, seeing as dreams arise from the subconscious mind itself. I like to describe liminal spaces as a sort of itching or even a massaging of the subconscious. Dreams are something I have personally always been utterly fascinated by ever since I was very young. Seeing liminal spaces feels like watching a dream without actually falling asleep. The vague familiarity of many of liminal spaces also often brings recollection of forgotten places and memories which introduces a nostalgia element. Nostalgia is a powerful, complex emotion. Fond melancholy, helpless yearning, off-putting comfort. These are just a few of the vast array of complex, even conflicting emotions and feelings that liminal spaces can evoke. Ultimately, liminality is open for interpretation. Its ambiguity has the ability to touch anyone uniquely. Liminal spaces are a mysterious, mesmerizing phenomenon.
