Temù (Brescia), 8 maggio 2021 - Prima parte

On May 8, 2021, two sisters from Temù, in the province of Brescia, reported their mother missing: she had gone for a walk and hadn't returned home after hours. The woman's name was Laura Ziliani, 55, and her daughters were Silvia, 27, and Paola Zani, 19. Her body was found three months later, on August 8, near a cycle path along the Oglio River. A flood had unearthed it. In the three months between the woman's disappearance and the discovery of her body, the investigation had focused on the Zani sisters and a young man who lived with them, Mirto Milani, 27, the boyfriend of the older sister, Silvia, but who was also having an affair with the younger sister, Paola. During those three months, Silvia and Paola Zani and Mirto Milani had carried out a series of grotesque and incredible red herrings. After admitting to the murder, they claimed to have drawn inspiration from television series: The Borgias, Dexter, and Breaking Bad. The reasoning the three defendants used to justify the murder was incredible, especially for the Court of Assizes and then the Court of Appeal. The experts who examined the three found them fully competent. According to the judges who handed down the sentence, the motive was not the one the three had claimed, but it was not financial either, as initially thought. The murder, according to the judges, had been planned and carried out to strengthen the trio's cohesion "with a convoluted plan for which TV series had provided a strong element of imitation and inspiration."
