The 3 Most Important Things I've Learned About Watercolor

In today's video, I'm sharing the top 3 things I’ve learned about watercolor (so far!) that every beginner should know. My hope is that these tips will help you avoid common mistakes and get started with more confidence! Find me on Tiktok:   / studio.of.stephanie   And instagram:   / studioofsteph   Here are some watercolor papers that I've personally used and have had success with (Amazon affiliate links): MEEDEN: https://amzn.to/4lQs0D6 This paper comes in various textures and sizes. I've used it a lot recently and it re-wets really well. My only complaint is that it dries a little fast. This makes landscapes and paintings where I'm wetting down large areas more difficult, but still doable. I just add extra water, and keep in mind that I need to work fast. I love the rough grain for loose florals. If I want a really beautiful textured paper with a lot of tooth, this is my go-to paper brand. Fingraspuro: https://amzn.to/4mJUsb8 This pad of paper works well for all watercolor techniques. It dries faster and is smoother than most artist grade paper. The latest pad I bought hasn't been as great so I'm wondering if they changed something, or I just got unlucky with a few sheets. It doesn't re-wet quite as well as the MEEDEN paper does, but it stays wet longer and I love practicing with it and using it for landscapes. ArtBeek: https://amzn.to/4p1ZiSq This is very similar to Fingraspuro, the main difference being that it's a spiral notebook vs. a pad. To remove the paper, you have to tear it from a perforated edge. The Fingraspuro just releases from the glue. This is a great option if you want a sketchbook style pad to keep all of your paintings in and if you prefer a spiral bound book. Arches: https://amzn.to/47nezqW If your budget allows or you want to splurge, Arches is the best of the best when it comes to artist grade watercolor paper (in my opinion). It stays damp longer than any other paper I've worked with which gives you lots of time to blend and add colors. Lifting paint and softening hard edges is a breeze with this paper. It can withstand scrubbing with a damp brush, and re-wetting multiple times. Having paper that is this level of quality isn't necessary, but it sure does make some things a lot easier!
