It is the first hatchback in the model series available with front-wheel drive and follows a sedan version (BMW F52) with the same drivetrain, which was not offered in Europe. The first vehicles were delivered in autumn 2019, and this 1 Series was awarded the Golden Steering Wheel in the compact car category. As early as 2015, press reports indicated that the successor to the F20 1 Series would have front-wheel drive. The manufacturer released the first photos of the vehicle on May 27, 2019. On the same day, the German-language automotive press, including auto motor und sport and Auto Bild, as well as other international (English-speaking and French-speaking) automotive journalists, uploaded their own presentations and previews from the manufacturer's premises at the BMW plant in Leipzig to their websites and the video platform YouTube. Leaks surfaced in mid-April 2019 showing parts of the undisguised vehicle (without the camouflage or other elements of a prototype). Selected journalists, analysts, and stakeholders were introduced to the new model at the BMW Group #NEXTGen presentation event, which included a partially delayed public livestream, from June 25 to 27, 2019, at BMW Welt in Munich (which was closed to the public). The presentation took place at the BMW Welt, specifically: a driving demonstration with two vehicles in the new vehicle delivery area/event space "Double Cone," followed by a later display of one vehicle in the foyer. The vehicle was first publicly shown at an automotive trade fair at the IAA in September 2019. The global market launch took place on September 28, 2019.
