W ramach serii można wyodrębnić trzy podserie odpowiadające kolejnym filmom: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Władca Pierścieni: Drużyna Pierścienia), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Władca Pierścieni: Dwie wieże) i The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Władca Pierścieni: Powrót króla).
