Discussion | Humanitarian crisis unfolds as thousands of Malawians await repatriation
Thousands of Malawian nationals who were displaced during recent anti-immigration protests linked to the March and March movement, have sought refuge at Sherwood Hall in Durban, creating a major humanitarian challenge in KwaZulu-Natal. With an estimated 10,000 people now sheltering at the site, aid organisations, government departments and the Malawian government are working to provide food, healthcare and temporary shelter, while accelerating repatriation efforts. As winter conditions worsen and the numbers continue to grow, concerns remain about the humanitarian response, repatriation process, and the long-term solution for those affected. We examine the humanitarian response, challenges on the ground, and the complex process of repatriating thousands of people safely and with dignity with Ward Councillor for Ward 30 in eThekwini, Warren Burne and Gift of the Givers Founder, Dr Imitiaz Sooliman.
