Overwintering tender gingers

Ornamental ginger plants are a great addition to any exotic garden. However, many ginger (Hedychium) plants do need winter protection. There are many ways to protect tender ginger plants in winter, and in this video I show you the space saving ways that work best for me. I start by lifting the ginger plants from the ground before the weather gets too cold. I then divide the ginger plants if they have grown enough this season. Next, I cut away all of the growing shoots as this will rot away in cold weather and I don't want the rot to spread to my ginger rhizomes. I then pot up my divided and trimmed ginger plants in dry multipurpose compost. As I don't have a greenhouse, I will keep them covered under a bench in my garden to prevent them getting too wet. if extremely cold weather is forecast I will move the ginger plants into the shed to keep them frost free for the necessary period of time.
