Couple couldn’t find affordable high-end prefab, so they created their own
Priced out of Madrid, architects Ignacio and Pilar bought cheap land on the outskirts instead - a steep, sloping lot thick with pine trees - and used their modular prefab system to build a home that fit the hillside perfectly without cutting down a single tree. It's their second self-built home: years earlier, as young architects priced out of central Madrid, they'd converted their own studio into "The Burrow," a partly underground stealth residence we featured back in 2022. This time, with the family growing, they designed a multi-unit version of their prefab system: a cluster of repeating modules, including a separate single-unit studio that first served as a home office. Set on preserving all 45 pine trees on the property, the modules arrived pre-finished and were assembled on-site in a matter of days, avoiding the years of disrupted soil that come with conventional construction. The whole build took about three months. Inside, warm wood, natural stone, and skylights bring the forest light in; outside, dark metal and glass let the house recede into the trees around it. The design philosophy runs through both of their homes: build small, build smart, and let the landscape do the rest of the work. We first met Ignacio and Pilar filming The Burrow, when they were expecting their first child. We returned to find a family of four, and a home already being planned to grow along with them. The home they live in is also the product they sell: through Tini, the couple offers their basic single-unit prefab, starting around $70,000, to anyone looking for the same kind of build. —Their prefabs, Tini: https://tiniliving.com/en/home/ —Their Madrid "Burrow" home (our 2022 visit): • The Burrow sunken home reflects zen garden...
