This fish ladder is amazing!

In this video I give you a tour of the incredible Diglis Island Fish Pass and shed light on why it's so important for not only fish species like the Twaite Shad and Salmon but for the health of the UK's longest river, the river Severn! If you'd like to learn more about these projects and the great work being undertaken by the Unlocking The Severn project please visit www.unlockingthesevern.co.uk for more information. This installation allows various fish species to navigate upstream to their natural spawning grounds. Fish Pass Design The fish pass is a vertical slot design, measuring 8 metres wide, 5 metres deep, and 100 metres long. It features 10 C sections, allowing water to drop 20 centimetres per section. This design enables fish like salmon and up to 25 other species to bypass the weir and reach their spawning areas. Historical Context The weirs were originally installed during the Industrial Revolution to aid navigation for boats. However, this obstructed fish like the twaite shad from reaching their spawning grounds for over 180 years. Innovative Features The fish pass includes a viewing gallery used for tours and scientific research. It features a large window and motion-activated cameras to observe fish movements. Sensors throughout the pass track pre-tagged fish, aiding scientists in studying fish behavior. Interview with Rick Rick, a volunteer and senior engineer at Canal River Trust, provides insights into the engineering marvel of the fish pass. He explains the significance of the project for the local environment and its impact on fish populations. Conclusion The video concludes with a call to action, encouraging viewers to support the channel for more insightful content about environmental projects and their impact on local ecosystems.
