Emotions ran high today in the Groningen courtroom surrounding the death of 12-year-old Gianny-Davey. Minutes before the start of the trial, relatives formed a large circle in the hallway to say a prayer, and moments later, his mother made impressive use of her right to speak. The 12-year-old boy was stabbed to death by his father late last year during a weekend trip. His father, Curtly E., was experiencing psychosis at the time, and the Public Prosecution Service therefore believes he cannot be held responsible for the crime. However, he should be forcibly admitted to a forensic psychiatric clinic. "On December 29th, my son, my everything, was taken from us. He was killed by his own father. Something that should never have happened. Thanks to the support of family and friends, I'm trying to move on. But that life feels empty and very heavy. We always said: 'Mom, we can handle anything, because I have you and you have me.' Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be. It's only been 12 years, but they were twelve beautiful and loving years. They were the best years of my life. Gianny, you are my life's work," said Gillian Boezerman, speaking at the opening of her speech. The Amsterdam native lost her son at the end of last year while he was spending a weekend with her ex-partner. Previous conviction: Curtly E. Curtly E. had been struggling for some time; he had previously been brought before the court for a violent crime. He had attempted to inflict grievous bodily harm on Gillian, with whom he had Gianny-Davey. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital for this and has since moved to Groningen. After that, E. was doing relatively well until January 2024, when he lost his father and fell into a depression. "I thought I was going to die, I don't know why," he said today. Because of the depression, he stopped taking his medication in September of last year, despite the fact that previous psychoses could be linked to temporarily stopping medication. And that was also the cause of the psychosis that led him to kill his own son in December 2024. "I wanted to cook eggs, went to the kitchen, saw a knife, and started stabbing him," E. said. The neighbor says she heard a sound like someone's hand around someone's throat and describes it as a squeaking sound. The whole thing reportedly lasted about ten minutes. The fatal stabbing While Gianny-Davey lay in a pool of blood in the room, E. took a shower, took some selfies with his son's blood on his shirt, washed the knife, and called a friend. An hour after the fatal stabbing, he called the police himself, who found the body of the 12-year-old boy. Curtly E. doesn't remember the exact motive for the attack, but several things triggered him in the hours leading up to it. He thought something wasn't right about a PlayStation cable, the boy's slippers, and a KFC order. E. also thought his son was joking with him when he tried to cook eggs. "I don't remember what triggered me, but it was him or me," the suspect stated today. E. thought his son was going to hurt him. After the stabbing, he lit a cigarette and drank a beer. Schizophrenia Although he is doing well in prison—with medication—E., according to experts, should be involuntarily committed to a forensic psychiatric clinic. A report describes him as schizophrenic and suggests there are indications of a personality disorder. According to them, he was not legally responsible at the time he stabbed Gianny-Davey to death. Stopping medication is crucial in this regard. "We believe he was already mentally ill. Something was already affecting his thinking. He therefore couldn't foresee the consequences," the experts stated at the hearing. The Public Prosecution Service concurs with the recommendation and finds that E. cannot be held accountable for the act. The prosecutor therefore requests that E. be acquitted of all charges.
