What a $400/Month Apartment Looks Like in Shenzhen (The Reality for Ordinary People)
I'm 41, and I recently went back to working a regular job. But spending almost 3 hours commuting every day is honestly starting to wear me down. So this weekend, I decided to look for a place closer to work, and while I'm at it, I thought I'd show you what life is actually like for a lot of ordinary people in one of China's most developed cities. When people think about Shenzhen, they usually think about opportunity, money, and technology. It's often called "China's Silicon Valley," where people come from all over the country hoping to build a better life. But the reality for ordinary workers is a lot less glamorous. Only about 14 percent of people here make more than $1,477 a month, while more than 60 percent make less than $900. Meanwhile, a basic studio apartment near major subway stations can easily cost between $500 and $700 a month. Once you add transportation, food, and utilities, there's often not much left. That's why more than half of Shenzhen's population ends up living in an "urban village"—a modern city wrapped around old villages where land still belongs to village collectives. The buildings here are packed extremely close together, sometimes only a few feet apart, earning them the nickname "handshake buildings". In this video, I take a look at what a $400/month apartment looks like inside these concrete walls. It made me realize something I never really thought about before: in this city, sunlight is a luxury, and it comes with a price tag. In a city that looks so modern and successful from the outside, millions of ordinary people keep it running, yet many of them have to look at the same brutal choice: do you exhaust your body with a grueling commute, or do you live in the dark just to have a temporary place to stay? ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Back to the regular job: The 3-hour commute 0:26 Breakfast for one: Why Chinese food isn't friendly for solo diners 0:47 Stepping into the heat: Shenzhen in the summer 1:48 Beyond the glamour: The hard salary and rent data of Shenzhen 3:07 What is an Urban Village?
