Green Ports Savona. Produzione, accumulo e distribuzione energia da fotovoltaico
Port of Savona, the integrated energy system enters its final phase: Port Grid and photovoltaic at 70% Work is progressing according to schedule at the Port of Savona to develop the integrated "Port Grid" energy system and install photovoltaic systems on six port warehouses, as part of projects funded by the PNRR and the "Green Ports" program for the decarbonization of logistics. The project aims to build an advanced energy infrastructure capable of integrating renewable energy generation, storage systems, and intelligent flow management. The new photovoltaic fields will enable the generation of clean energy, which will be stored and efficiently redistributed within the port, also supporting electric vehicle charging. The goal is to progressively strengthen the port's energy self-sufficiency. One component already completed is the two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), based on lithium-ion batteries, designed to ensure continuous supply even at night or during low solar production conditions. In terms of electrical infrastructure, three new substations have been built, one of which is nearing completion, while work continues to modernize and interconnect existing substations, necessary for full system integration. At the same time, an initial internal electric mobility network is already operational, with 10 charging stations installed within the port area. The overall operation of the system will be governed by an Energy Management System (EMS) platform, which will coordinate energy production, storage, and distribution in real time, with the aim of prioritizing the use of self-generated energy and limiting reliance on the national grid to only when necessary. Regarding renewable energy generation, the installation of photovoltaic arrays on warehouses T2, T3, T4, T7, T8, and MLM is now well underway, with completion expected by the end of June 2026. Overall, the project is approximately 70% complete. Once the work is completed and the testing phases are completed, estimated to take approximately three months, the system will be able to power a wide range of port infrastructure: from customs gates to public lighting, to the port's administrative offices and charging stations for electric vehicles. Tito Vespasiani, Secretary General: "The project represents a concrete step in the energy transition of the Port of Savona, with direct effects on the port's energy autonomy, emissions reduction, and the overall modernization of port infrastructure. The implementation of the Port Grid system represents a structural evolution of the port: from a logistics hub to an energy platform, capable of producing, managing, and using energy efficiently. This is an essential step to reducing emissions, improving process efficiency, and supporting the ecological transition of the entire port system. The ongoing projects in Savona and Genoa are fully aligned with the objectives of the PNRR's Green Ports program, which aims to make port activities increasingly sustainable through energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources. In this context, Port Grid represents one of the most advanced projects in our port system."
