But when I asked DeepSeek about its socialist model, I was told: ‘Sorry, this is beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.’ (In other words — too sensitive..!) Intrigued and skeptical, I decided to come and see for myself. Now a popular "red tourism" destination, Nanjie Village is lined with towering billboards bearing revolutionary-era slogans — reminiscent of a period that once inspired immense hope, and later, deep disillusionment. But is it just a showpiece model village? A living relic of a bygone era? Or something more deliberate — a later reconstruction, actively recreating traces of our Maoist past? Join me on a caffeine-deprived, yet nonetheless stimulus-filled day of futile attempts: To find a cup of coffee in a village with no cafés, no corner shops, and not a street vendor in sight. Just wide, spotless streets. Communal canteens. And a supermarket where locals pay with a welfare card, not cash. And to escape the loudspeakers — mounted around the main square, hung at intervals along every street, bolted to lampposts, hidden in trees — all broadcasting revolutionary speeches and red songs from dawn till dusk.
