With elevations of just under 500 meters, the Weser Uplands, on both sides of the Weser River, are among the smaller low mountain ranges. The railway runs through them. In the past, these lines were important east-west routes between the Ruhr region and Central Germany. Today, freight and long-distance passenger services have almost completely ceased.
