She was the only woman among the founders of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. She was born on September 24, 1862, in Rio de Janeiro. As a child, she moved with her family to Campinas. In 1886, she traveled to Portugal. In that country, she married the Portuguese writer Filinto de Almeida (1857-1945) and published her first book. In Brazil, she wrote for several periodicals, an uncommon activity for women of the time, and was the only woman among the founders of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, although she was prevented from occupying a seat in that institution. Considered a writer with advanced ideas for her time, as she defended the abolition of slavery, the republic, divorce, formal education for women, and civil rights, Júlia Lopes de Almeida is associated with realism and naturalism. Thus, the short story writer, novelist, columnist, and playwright had relative success in her time, before passing away on May 30, 1934, in Rio de Janeiro. About the Book Published in 1922, A Isca (The Bait) is a book composed of four novellas, the first two, A Isca and O Homem que Olha pra Dentro (The Man Who Looks Inside), about social relationships, love, and deception. This is followed by the romantic novella O Laço Azul (The Blue Ribbon), where Raul falls in love with two sisters, unaware that they are twins. The book concludes with the supernatural-style novella "The Old Man's Finger," in which Claudino is haunted by a hand that flips through a book, marking a passage where he must search for another man named Lourenço, whom he had recently met at Cora's house, and with whom they are both in love. But Lourenço had his arm cut off the previous day by Cora's husband, leading to unexpected discoveries. The novellas in the book always have an unexpected ending, showing that we are led down unknown paths because of our upbringing and expectations, with Júlia's always modern and surprising style, leaving us with a feeling of sadness or a smile at the end of each story.
