The planet's native scavengers, Jawas, find upon the wreckage immediately following the crash. When the Jawas discover that the sole survivor is a carnivorous Rancor, they make arrangements to sell it to the only one in the Dune Sea who would interested - Jabba the Hutt. A Corellian named Malakili is brought to Tatooine to be the keeper of Jabba's Rancor, due to his unparalleled skill as a beast handler. Over the next few years Malakili watches with pride as the rancor devours many of the enemies of Jabba whom are sent to the Rancor's pit. Malakili is overjoyed to have custody of Jabba's Rancor, but resents the captivity of his beast. He and the Rancor develop a rapport, convincing Malakili to find a way to free the beast. He makes an agreement with Jabba's rival, Lady Valarian, to escape with the Rancor to a remote planet. However, the date of the escape fatefully coincides with the arrival of Luke Skywalker, who kills the creature. Anderson that features TWENTY short stories set in and around Jabba's Palace. It is the second volume of the Tales Series, and it was first published by Bantam Spectra on December 1, 1995. The book was followed by Tales of the Bounty Hunters (1996) and was reprinted in Star Wars: Tales (1997). In the dusty heat of twin-sunned Tatooine lives the wealthiest gangster in a hundred worlds, master of a vast crime empire and keeper of a vicious, flesh-eating monster for entertainment (and disposal of his enemies).
