It's not widespread, but it does happen. Sometimes we even receive messages asking, "How can I remove the restriction on my e-bike?" In this video, we'll tell you what we answer. We'll explain the real consequences of removing or modifying your e-bike: 1. The fine The fine... Yes. Removing the restriction on a bike can result in a fine from the Civil Guard or the Local Police in your municipality. But not because of the technical removal of the restriction. Rather, by removing the restriction, you turn your e-bike into a moped. An e-bike would fall under the EPAC category. This means having: • Pedal assistance from an auxiliary electric motor up to a maximum continuous rated power of 250W, only and exclusively while pedaling. • Pedal assistance up to 25 km/h. This is regulated by European regulations and included in the General Vehicle Regulations and the General Traffic Regulations. If you remove the restrictions, the e-bike becomes the equivalent of a moped. Therefore, it requires registration, insurance, and a vehicle inspection (MOT). And if you don't have all of that: For driving without insurance: A fine of between €600 and €3,000 and the vehicle's tank or seal. The amount depends on the vehicle, whether it's being driven, and the vehicle will be reinstated. For driving without a vehicle inspection (MOT): €200 And if, on top of that, you don't have a driver's license... well, you could even be arrested. In short, you can end up with administrative and even criminal violations. Anyway, it's not easy for an officer to give you the full package... But you get something for sure. 2. Goodbye warranty. I've seen €5,000 paperweights. As I said, rigged bikes arrive at the manufacturer, they detect the cheating, and... there's no warranty. The bike and motor brands won't look any further. If they detect that the bike has been derestricted at any point, it's over. And it's not enough to simply derestrict it again. We've consulted with several brands this week, and they confirm that the derestriction is detected in the software. Furthermore, they can also do so by analyzing other parameters. If the problem affects the motor and battery, the total cost of the repair can be more than €2,000 to €3,000. 3. And who's rigging it? In 2020, AMBE and CONEBI warned about the obvious: that shops and workshops that derestrict or rig ebikes may also be liable. Because, after all, if someone has a serious accident with an ebike, their family, their insurance, or even the bike itself could look for "liable parties" and "guilty parties." And in that case, the shop or workshop could be committing, and I quote, "inciting an administrative offense." That is, they could end up taking on some serious trouble. While preparing this script, I spoke with a couple of technical services in the sector, and they assured me they've already received requests for reports from insurance companies in the event of an accident. 4. A shorter lifespan... Not yours. But your bike's. On an unlimited bike, the motor suffers more and the battery lasts much less. And we're not talking about autonomy. It will only have more range when charged and, therefore, will have a shorter lifespan. And it also suffers more depending on the type of use. 5. The end of e-bikes This is one of the biggest risks for the end of e-bikes.
