My Old Kentucky Home | Appalachian Folk Duet (Traditional 1850s Version)

Experience a soulful and sparse Appalachian Folk Duet rendition of the 1853 masterpiece, "My Old Kentucky Home." This arrangement strips away the grand orchestration often heard at the Kentucky Derby, returning the song to its roots as a haunting, acoustic folk ballad. While we have remained musically true to the original structure and sentiment that has resonated for over 170 years, certain lyrical changes have been made to ensure this version is respectful and accessible to a modern audience. This is a tribute to the enduring power of the melody and the deep sense of "home" that the song evokes. 👉 Subscribe for more traditional hymns, Appalachian folk songs, bluegrass gospel, and historical American music ‪@CalvinWilsonRoad‬ Stream on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/7bFPDs... 📜 The History: From 1853 to the Modern Era Written by the "Father of American Music," Stephen Foster, and published in 1853, "My Old Kentucky Home" became a global phenomenon almost instantly. It was originally inspired by the anti-slavery movement of the mid-19th century, particularly the imagery found in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Since its release in the 1850s, the song has undergone countless transformations. It has been a parlor song, a minstrel hit, a civil rights anthem, and since 1928, the official state song of Kentucky. Because of its 19th-century origins, the lyrics have been updated over the decades—most notably by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1986—to remove racially insensitive terminology while preserving the song's themes of longing, family, and the bittersweet nature of time passing. In this Folk Duet version, we celebrate the "sun shinin' bright" and the "birds makin' music all the day," honoring the song’s place as a cornerstone of the American folk tradition. Lyrics: My Old Kentucky Home [Verse 1] The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home ‘Tis summer, the people are glad The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom While the birds make music all the day The young folks roll on the little cabin floor All merry, all happy and bright By ‘n’ by Hard Times comes a-knocking at the door Then my old Kentucky home, goodnight [Chorus] Weep no more my lady, oh! weep no more today We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home For the Old Kentucky Home far away [Verse 2] They hunt no more for the possum and the raccoon On meadow, the hill and the shore They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon On the bench by the old cabin door The day goes by like a shadow o’er the heart With sorrow, where all was delight The time has come when the people have to part Then my old Kentucky home, goodnight [Chorus] Weep no more my lady, oh! weep no more today We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home For the Old Kentucky Home far away [Verse 3] A few more days, and the trouble all will end In the field where the sugar-canes grow A few more days for to tote the weary load No matter, ’twill never be light A few more days till we totter on the road Then my old Kentucky home, goodnight [Chorus] Weep no more my lady, oh! weep no more today We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home For the Old Kentucky Home far away 💬 A Moment for the Bluegrass: Whether you are at Churchill Downs or on a front porch in the hills, this song always brings a sense of nostalgia.
