July's presidential election in Indonesia was a widely reported event. But one of the key issues, and one that was not mentioned much in international reports, was population control. At roughly 250 million people, Indonesia accounts for 40% of all of Asean's population. It is the fourth-most populous nation on Earth. This is a huge potential for domestic demand, and precisely why many Japanese companies have expanded into Indonesia. But the country has not been able to fully use its population growth to its advantage. The term "population bonus" describes a demographic breakdown in which the working-age population -- between 15 and 64 -- is greater than that of the children and the elderly. This is when a country can best make the most of its large labor pool and channel this subsequent income growth to boost domestic demand. Japan did exactly this following World War II. Indonesia's population bonus phase began in the 1970s and is forecast to continue until around 2030. But a look at the economic figures shows that the country is not fully utilizing this blessing.
