Cain, whose name and character is control, instrumentalizes his interactions with God and with his brother, Abel or Hevel. For the one given to control, persons are tools – either useful or useless. Here we consider the primary ethical responsibility of looking at the face of another and the fundamental distortion of asking "what's a brother good for?"
