Planxty: The Story of Irish Folk Music's Greatest Supergroup
Planxty were arguably the most influential band of the Irish Folk Revival, revolutionizing traditional music in the 1970s. In this video, I explore how they helped save Irish music from extinction and paved the way for modern folk, alongside legends like The Dubliners and The Chieftains. _________________________________________ 🎩 Check out the Irish Music shop! 👉 www.shop.insideirishmusic.com _________________________________________ Running up from the 1920s to the 1950s, Irish Music was on the brink of extinction. It was pushed out of the public eye and forced to hide in country house kitchens and the likes of that. Some bands took it back to the forefront, many that we know, The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Wolfe Tones, Clancy Brothers with Sean O'Riada arguably one of the most prominent figures throughout the folk revival. But we should never forget Planxty. Every band and figure throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s who championed Irish traditional music and Irish folk music, were responsible in some way or another for their part in the Irish Folk Revival. Planxty consisted of so many people throughout the years, and those members had went on to form many other bands, all with their own style, innovating and changing the music scene to what it is we see today. Without these amazing musicians, who knows if Irish Music altogether could have been wiped out. I like to think that it would have lived on either way, but it's always interesting to explore these topics.
