The bombardment of Hull through the eyes of a child (Stories from the Strongrooms)
Welcome to this special edition of Stories from the Strongrooms, the first of three presentations developed to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Hull Blitz in May 1941. We are used to hearing accounts of The Second World war from the official records but in this presentation children from schools across Hull narrate extracts from essays written by 10-12 year olds in 1942 entitled, ‘What happened to me and what I did in the air raids’ which allow us to glimpse what it was really like to be in an air raid and the effects it had on those involved. Our webpage on The Second World War includes a useful source guide to help you find books and documents relating to the conflict which can be found at: http://www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk/r... The History Centre holds a vast collection of records relating to The Second World War, including records relating to the Civil Defence in Hull, damage to property, and photographs of the aftermath of the 86 raids which reveal the true devastation of the City after the conflict. To discover more about our records relating to the Second War in Hull, the work we do and the collections held within our walls, head over to our website at: www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk.
