Why The German Army Suddenly Stopped Surrendering In 1944

In late 1944, something broke inside the German Army. The discipline and calculation that had defined the Wehrmacht for years began to vanish, replaced by a brutal, suicidal resolve. Soldiers stopped surrendering. Units fought past the point of logic. Entire formations chose annihilation over capture. When the Red Army crossed into East Prussia in October 1944, German forces briefly retook the village of Nemmersdorf. What they found there did more than shock the front; it rewired it. The discovery, and how it was weaponised, transformed fear into policy and survival into ideology. From that point on, the Eastern Front ceased to function as a conventional battlefield. Surrender to Soviet forces became unthinkable. Retreat became impossible.
