The Unfettered Mind | Takuan Sōhō | Full Audiobook Pt. 1
The first part of the complete audiobook reading of The Unfettered Mind by Takuan Sōhō — three letters written in early seventeenth-century Japan by a Rinzai Zen monk to Yagyū Munenori, sword instructor to the Tokugawa Shogun. The text is not a combat manual. It is a precise and demanding analysis of how the mind operates under pressure — and what it must release in order to act from its full depth. This part covers the first letter, Fudōchi Shinmyōroku — Immovable Wisdom — in full. Takuan opens by identifying what he calls the abiding place: the location where the mind stops, fixes on an object, and becomes vulnerable. He traces that tendency from its most obvious forms through increasingly refined levels of abstraction, showing how fixation relocates as skill improves — from the opponent's sword to the opponent's strategy to the self that is watching itself act. The disease does not disappear with training. It becomes more subtle. The chapters move from the diagnosis of the problem through its psychological mechanics, examining the right mind and the confused mind, the distinction between the existent mind and no-mind, and the paradox that trying to place the mind correctly is itself a form of displacement. The argument is not linear. It is orbital — returning to the same moment from different angles until the shape of the problem becomes precise enough to be felt. Read in full without cuts or interruptions. 0:00 Chapter 1 — The Affliction of Abiding in Ignorance 2:56 Chapter 2 — The Immovable Wisdom of All Buddhas 12:26 Chapter 3 — The Interval Into Which Not Even a Hair Can Be Entered 14:04 Chapter 4 — The Action of Spark and Stone 19:14 Chapter 5 — Where One Puts the Mind 24:56 Chapter 6 — The Right Mind and the Confused Mind 26:21 Chapter 7 — The Mind of the Existent Mind and the Mind of No-Mind 49:51 Chapter 8 — Throw the Gourd Into the Water; Push It Down and It Will Float Takuan Soho, The Unfettered Mind full series: The Unfettered Mind | A Zen Monk Writes to a Swordsman: • The Unfettered Mind | A Zen Monk Writes to...
