September 18, 1984 Commercial Breaks – WPTF (NBC, Raleigh-Durham)

Commercial breaks taken from the syndicated presentation of the 1st Annual MTV Video Music Awards Show on NBC affiliate WPTF (now myNetworkTV affiliate WRDC) in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. As MTV was not as widely-distributed as it is today, the channel made its Video Music Awards shows available to local TV stations through syndication for the first couple of years. Independent stations (of which Raleigh-Durham had three; one, WLFL, being full-market) usually grabbed these to air in primetime, but WPTF aired it in the market instead, pre-empting or postponing that night's NBC programming. This was a common practice on WPTF (and later WRDC,) eventually leading to NBC pulling its affiliation and moving it to then-WB affiliate WNCN (channel 17, which would later become an NBC O&O) in 1995. WRDC would then move its secondary UPN affiliation to primary, with the WB affiliation going to recent sign-on WRAZ (channel 50.) WRDC then joined myNetworkTV when UPN and the WB shut down in 2006. The NBC affiliation for the Raleigh-Durham market is now on WRAL (channel 5.)
