Don't Let Diarrhea Ruin Your Chicken Farm – Here's What to Do! Diarrhea in chickens is a condition in which birds have liquid or semi-formed feces, in greater quantities than normal. This change can be easily identified by observing the bottom of the sheds, the perches or the areas where the birds usually stay. Fecal Feces Fecal feces are the residue resulting from normal digestion in the small and large intestines. They represent the majority of the material excreted by chickens. Characteristics: Frequency: Produced several times throughout the day. Appearance: Firmer consistency. Brown or green color, depending on the feed. They have a white layer on top, which is uric acid (metabolic residue of proteins, excreted by the kidneys). Function: Indicative of the normal daily digestion of birds. Cecal Feces Cecal feces are produced in the two ceca (parts of the bird's digestive system) and are eliminated less frequently, usually once or twice a day. Characteristics: Frequency: Eliminated less often, but in greater quantities at one time. Appearance: More liquid or pasty. Darker color, usually reddish-brown. Stronger and more characteristic odor. Function: Represents the microbial fermentation that occurs in the ceca, where fibers and other indigestible materials are processed.
