ආගමික නීති පද්ධති 3 - බෞද්ධ නීතිය

Unlike the Christian and Islamic legal traditions, academic writings on Buddhist legal tradition are rare. First, we should know about Buddhist Law because Buddhism has a detailed law code and a very long legal history. Second, Buddhist Law is uniquely focused on the socialization and internalization of the individual to a set of rules that will help him or her operate within a community. Lord Buddha's teachings called the Dhamma consist of 3 aspects, namely doctrine, practice and realization. The doctrine is preserved in the scripture called the Tripitaka (which in Pali means 3 baskets). The first is the Vinaya Pitaka ("Basket of Discipline") is still in theory the rule in Theravada monasteries, even though some sections have fallen into disuse. The largest of the three "baskets" is the Sutta Pitaka ("Basket of Discourse"), which consists of five collections (nikayas) of the Buddha's discourses. The third "basket," the Abhidhamma Pitaka ("Basket of Special Doctrine"), comprises seven works. Although based on the contents of the Buddha's discourses, they deal with topics that were central to Theravada scholastic thought. There is little doubt that the Buddha, the central religious leader and not his community of followers, is considered the sole source of these rules, the architect of Buddhist Law.
