City of Mesa: 2019 (Residential)

A summary of Mesa's 2019 operations. Their fleet contains a small handful of 320 CNG Curbtenders, and is largely CNG Peterbilt Scorpions. Mesa is one of the only major cities of the valley to modify its recycling program (except Surprise, who eliminated recycling). They aimed to "simplify" recycling by only accepted beverage bottles & cans, corrugated cardboard, and paper. This effectively eliminates #2 HDPE (color), glass jars (not bottles), paperboard, paper bags, and #1 and 2 plastic jars. The result seems to have largely resulted in confusion, frustration, and many giving up recycling altogether. In another unfortunate twist for Mesa Recycles, Republic's Salt River MRF (located in Mesa) burnt down only days after the program change. Republic's backup MRF, North Gateway, has been offline for major equipment upgrades. Last I heard, Republic reached an agreement with Waste Management to process recycling from Scottsdale, Mesa and Gilbert at their Surprise facility.
