Calenda durissimo contro Renzi: "Basta giochetti su partito unico, Iv attacca perché vuole rompere"

A three-hour meeting between the leaders of Azione and Italia Viva wasn't enough to reach an agreement on the path to a single party. Indeed, after the exchange of accusations in recent days, a split seems ever closer. In fact, at the end of the meeting, Renzi-supporting MP Elena Bonetti reassured: "There is a will to move forward together." Shortly thereafter, however, Azione secretary Carlo Calenda offered a completely different account, with a frontal attack on Italia Viva leader Matteo Renzi. Calenda's main accusation against Renzi was that he wanted to continue his party's political activities into 2024, following the planned merger between the two parties. "For us, it is unacceptable," Calenda said, "that Italia Viva and the Leopolda party, financed by the 2x1000 tax return, should continue to exist, while the new party is expected to be formed without funds, without personnel, and without a headquarters." The Azione leader also highlighted the attacks against him that have come in the last few hours from Renzi supporters: "Renzi says he's Zen, but his MPs paint me almost like the Monster of Florence. This trick doesn't work; it shows a desire to break things off, but I'm not playing the game of being left holding the bag." Another point of contention between the parties concerns the rules on conflicts of interest. Calenda has asked that only those who aren't involved in lobbying can become leaders of the new party. This rule is clearly designed to exclude Renzi, given his known ties to Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund.
