Mind Games & The Lost Weekend: John Lennon’s Affair With May Pang

John Lennon and Yoko Ono separated for an 18 month period between 1973 and 1975, known as Lennon’s “Lost Weekend”. This era of his life is synonymous with binge drinking, reckless behavior, and loneliness. While Lennon displayed plenty of toxicity during this time, according to John’s former assistant and lover, May Pang, it was much more than sex, drugs, and rock and roll. During the Lost Weekend, John made music, reconnected with his estranged son, Julian, and began to establish himself as an individual apart from his wife and his fame. Though she was begrudgingly appointed as John’s mistress by Yoko during their separation, May fell in love with John. Even though the Lost Weekend ended after a year and a half, May and John’s romance continued up until his murder in December 1980. In the years since, May has maintained that their relationship was not a passing tryst, but an unlikely love story.
