Returning to the robe: Shohaku Okumura on the early history of Soto Zen & nyoho-e

In the first of two lectures on the meaning and history of nyoho-e (the robe of the dharma of thusness) within the Soto Zen tradition, Okumura Roshi traces the early lineage following Dogen's death, as part of the story of how the robe-style that Dogen wore and taught about may have changed through the course of Japanese Buddhist history. He then begins to offer commentary on Hobuku Kakusho by Soto Zen clergy and scholar Mokushitsu Ryoyo, one of the important Togukawa period texts related to the effort to revive the authentic form of the robe worn by Dogen (now called nyoho-e). Recorded on June 7th, 2026. To learn more about nyoho-e, visit our Sawaki Nyoho-e Treasury: https://sanshin-source.weebly.com/saw...
