Being part of a minority is a difficult and complicated thing, especially for teenagers. It's damned hard to grow up as a teenager without ever having seen a movie in which someone loves someone else the way you love someone else, without ever having heard a love song the way you would have written it; it makes you think you're the only one in the world. Think about it. Children of any minority are equal to their parents. If you're the child of a religious minority, you're equal to your parents. If you belong to an ethnic minority, the same is true. In any case, for a child who must face the world as part of a minority, family is the place of protection, validation, and self-affirmation. But for a gay or lesbian teenager, this isn't the case, because your parents are different from you and can be indifferent, if not hostile. Now, the Valditara bill requires middle and high schools to obtain written informed consent from parents, or students if they are over 18, before starting activities or projects related to sexuality and affection. But when classmates sense your difference, or when you have to ask permission from a hostile parent, believe me, it is precisely in those moments that school is important. Schools must have the tools to teach everyone, not just those who choose, respect and dignity for each individual. The Valditara bill is thus a gate that closes on the pain of that adolescent who feels alone and abandoned. Abandoned twice: by his family, and by his classmates. It seems to me that the government makes laws with the Mulino Bianco family in mind, but the reality is quite different. Laws in Parliament should resolve situations where things aren't working, not those idealized by a majority that sees things through the lens of ideology. We at Italia Viva are therefore against this law on informed consent in schools. I, who was a gay teenager, am even more so.
