Thomas Wakefield: Beethoven/Alkan Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37 - 1st movement, Alkan's cadenza
Another one from Alkan: A Symposium (1992). Predating Marc-André Hamelin's legendary Wigmore Hall live recording, Thomas Wakefield gives us the first commercial recording of Alkan's solo piano transcription of Beethoven's piano concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37, 1st movement, plus Alkan's own cadenza. On the CD, it is split up into two tracks (the second track starts at the beginning of the cadenza), but I keep it as one seamless track in this video. Thomas Wakefield is a truly fantastic pianist, and it sounds like this was recorded in either one long take or few long segments. There is a little more of his playing available on YouTube, but it sounds like he has had an accomplished career, and I wish even more recordings of him were available. He has long been affiliated with the Alkan Society and has performed many works by Alkan.
