The Development of Inhaled Therapies for Pulmonary Hypertension - Prof. Luke Howard

Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a rare and life-threatening condition that demands new approaches to treatment. In this talk, Professor Luke Howard (National Pulmonary Hypertension Service, Hammersmith Hospital; Imperial College London) explores the science, innovation, and future of inhaled therapies for PH. This presentation covers: The rationale for inhaled drug delivery: targeting the lungs directly, minimizing systemic side effects, and providing rapid, site-specific treatment Historic and current inhaled therapies, including Iloprost and Treprostinil aerosol/DPI formulations Advances in inhaled nitric oxide systems, showing how delivery devices impact patient quality of life Lessons from discontinued programs (e.g., Imatinib in PAH) and how inhaled alternatives (AV-101, Seralutinib) aim to overcome safety limitations The role of novel imaging and trial data in tracking disease progression and therapy effectiveness Future directions: PRN (as-needed) use of inhaled therapies and the trend toward targeting lung fibrosis in PH Why inhaled therapies matter: Deliver medication directly to diseased lung tissue. Reduce unwanted systemic exposure. Enable fast, flexible treatment for patients. Open new possibilities for precision drug development in rare diseases.
