The book Al-Hikam is a monumental work of the third mursyid of the As-Syadziliyyah order, so it is the main source for understanding the teachings of the As-Syadziliyyah order and is included in the discipline of understanding the study of Sufism, so this book is the best and most comprehensive work written by Ibn 'Athaillaah As-Sakandari. This book was written by the author in an 'economical' manner because it does not include references in the form of supporting verses of the Qur'an, Al-hadith and various other arguments. More than that, this book seems to be written as a reflection of the author's spiritual experience. However, its presentation is a distinct advantage for Al-Hikam, because on the one hand, the richness (depth) of the meaning it contains has been maintained for hundreds of years, then it can only be explored with a number of commentaries (syarh) that try to elaborate on the richness of its meaning. Al-Hikam is a book intended for travelers (sâlik), which contains further guidance for every traveler to undertake a spiritual journey. AlHikam contains various strict suluk terminology, which refers to various terms in the Koran. The book al-Hikam is also seen as a heavyweight book not only because of its highly literary sentence structure, but also the depth of the wisdom expressed in its short sentences. It is a book whose language is extraordinarily beautiful. Words and meaning support each other to give birth to moving expressions. This book is a practical guide for a Muslim in the midst of busyness and a strong wave of materialism. The book al-Hikam contains several important teachings about self-management, including: 1. A wise person is a person who does not boast about his deeds of worship. People who are proud of their deeds have little hope in Allah, so whatever they obtain is thought to be because of their deeds of worship, not because of Allah's mercy and womb. Meanwhile, wise/wise people, in strengthening their faith in Allah, always adhere to the power and iradah that exist in Allah SWT. 2. Deeds of worship that are strong and firmly tied to faith are worship carried out by a sincere heart. Because sincerity is the spirit of charity, and such charity shows the upholding of faith. If the act of worship is not based on sincerity, it will lead the servant to become arrogant and forget himself. 3. A heart that lives with faith will feel sad if that faith and obedience are lost from it. The heart of a believer is very happy when he has carried out goodness or obedience. 4. People who do good deeds while waiting for their free time are the same as people who play with time. Time goes on, while there is no free time, so charity has not been carried out. If the time to do charity is very limited, then the opportunity to do charity may not be sufficient. 5. If a person understands a trial that comes from Allah and is accepted with pleasure, then the trial will be felt as something very light.
