It is worth noting that shoulder impingement syndrome does not only affect high-performance athletes, but also weekend athletes. According to Castro (2009), “shoulder impingement syndrome is a painful entity produced by the friction of the tendons of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis muscles of the rotator cuff and the tendon of the long head of the biceps, as it passes through the coracoacromial arch (coracoid process, co-acromial ligament and anteroinferior border of the acromion)”. Of the injuries that most affect athletes in this region, the most frequent are undoubtedly rotator cuff injuries. There are several causes related to the appearance of this injury, which is associated with natural ischemia, also known as the “critical area” of the rotator cuff muscle tendon. Neer described rotator cuff injuries in three stages for the first time in 1972. In stage I, edema, hemorrhage, shoulder pain, pain with movement and limitation of internal rotation occur; stage II, fibrosis and tendonitis itself; stage III, rotator cuff tears, bicipital tendon ruptures and bone spurs. The author emphasizes that “chronic rotator cuff injuries are the most frequent cause of painful symptoms located in the shoulder” (NEER, 1993). Health professionals use the term “sore shoulder” to refer to pain specific to the shoulder girdle. Among the best-known causes are: shoulder impingement syndrome, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) and glenohumeral and acromioclavicular osteoarthritis.
