President José Antonio Kast declared a State of Emergency due to the disaster on Monday for the Coquimbo region and the Huasco province in northern Chile, following disruptions to the drinking water supply, landslides, rising river levels, and power outages caused by the storm system that has been affecting the country since last week. The measure was announced at the Cabinet meeting, in the context of the storm that has left five dead, four missing, and more than 99,000 people isolated nationwide, according to this morning's report from the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred). Following the report, the municipality of La Serena announced the deaths of two municipal employees, and the municipality of Coquimbo reported two more. The Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Louis de Grange, anticipated that reconstruction costs will reach "several hundred million dollars."
