ROADTRIP WITH A SCOOTER through INDONESIA – DAY 19 – 3 CRATERS, 3 LAKES, 3 COLORS – Kelimutu Volcano This is a film from a series that presents a road trip or scooter excursion through Indonesia, more precisely through a few islands east of Bali. I packed a small bag with a few clothes and every day I explored places I hadn’t been to yet. I had a goal, but I didn’t set a specific route or itinerary. I adapted on the fly and was willing to make adjustments depending on mood, fatigue, or what I found along the way. Being accommodated at the foot of Kelimutu, on day 19 of the trip, I woke up early in the morning and climbed toward the entrance of Kelimutu National Park. I was almost alone on the trail. Kelimutu mountain, located on Flores island in the Indonesian archipelago, is known for its unique landscape dominated by three volcanic lakes that periodically change their colors. Each lake formed in a crater left by volcanic eruptions. These lakes, located in the crater of Kelimutu volcano, are a spectacular natural attraction due to the rare phenomenon of color changes, ranging from shades of blue, green, and turquoise to red, brown, or even black. This color variation is caused by chemical reactions between minerals dissolved in the water and volcanic gases rising from the crater. The three lakes have symbolic names and hold spiritual significance for the locals. Tiwu Ata Bupu, known as the "Old People’s Lake," is the calmest; Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri, the "Lake of the Youth and Maidens," is a lighter color; and Tiwu Ata Polo, the "Lake of the Evil," is the darkest. On the internet and on the park’s information boards, the lakes are also listed under other names. Locals believe that each lake receives the souls of the deceased according to their deeds in life. At the highest point, the summit of Kelimutu reaches an altitude of 1,639 meters. Kelimutu is considered a sacred place and a symbol of the deep connection between nature and spirituality. At the same time, this destination is popular among tourists, who come not only for the spectacular scenery but also to experience the peace and mystery that surround this volcano.
