The topic of pruning can be a little difficult for those without experience. Even among long-time azalea enthusiasts, few have a clear purpose for pruning after flowering. By understanding the video and changing the way you cut the branches, you'll achieve faster results. Marumo, who had never pruned after flowering before, was momentarily taken aback by the intermediate-level explanation. First, you need to understand that you can reset the buds after flowering and allow next year's flower buds to form around summer. It's probably easier to understand how to prune buds once you've gained more experience. To briefly explain the three methods for pruning azalea: ① Leaving two buds (leaving two buds and two leaves) Leave two buds that split the new shoots that grow in spring, and cut them back so that only two leaves remain at the tip. Two new shoots will grow between the remaining leaves. Use this cut when you want the tip of the branch to grow longer. ② Pin the leaves at the base This cut is the best for post-bloom pruning. Cut off all new shoots that grew in spring, leaving only the old leaves, or even the old leaves, leaving only the leaf rachises. This resets growth from spring and prevents the trellis from growing too large. Four to five new shoots will sprout from the cut, allowing for more growth. Satsuki trees will continue to grow if not pruned after flowering, so this cut is recommended when you want to maintain the current state of the tree, such as a mature tree. ③ Trunk Cut This cut is not often used after flowering, but it involves cutting the new shoots that grew in spring just below the base, at the brown point. Many new shoots will sprout from the remaining buds. This cut is recommended when you want to increase the number of buds even more than with leaf pinning. Of these three cuts, ① and ② are the main ones used for post-flowering pruning. Cutting depends on the time of year and the condition of the tree, but experience is required. #SatsukiFlowerPicking #PostBloomPruning #SatsukiBonsai #RoundTray
