The personality of Bipin Chandra Pal inspired Indian youth, including Ullaskar Dutt, who actively fought against colonial rule during his student days. This was at a time when the Swadeshi Movement was at its peak, and Ullaskar gave up foreign clothes in favour of traditional Bengali attire. He joined revolutionary organisations like Anushilan Samiti. In 1908, Ullaskar was arrested on charges of involvement in the Alipore Bomb Case. He was accused of devising an explosive to derail a train and kill Andrew Fraser, the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. In 1909, he was sentenced to death. Initially, he refused to sign an appeal against the sentence but later did so on the advice of fellow revolutionaries like Barin Ghosh and his parents. ‪@CultureQuantum‬ As a result, his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment, and he was transported to Kala Pani, where he suffered colonial atrocities. Ullaskar was subjected to electric shocks that had a severe impact on his health. He often remained unconscious for days and developed suicidal tendencies. His mental condition deteriorated, and he was moved to a mental asylum before being transferred to Madras to serve his sentence. Ullaskar wrote two books in Bengali, "Dvipantarer Katha" and "Amar Karajiban," which provide a firsthand account of the oppressive colonial regime's brutalities. His life story is a testament to the relentless struggle that our great freedom fighters had to endure against the British colonial administration. He also had one more undiscovered story to share, which Neeraj Rao and his team retold.
