Why Tao, Kris, and Luhan left EXO during their peak

The dominant EXO era started at the peak of their popularity in early 2014. EXO would dominate award shows, amass millions of fans, and win the 2013 Song of the Year Award in “Growl.” The only thing that could have slowed down the EXO train was themselves. And that’s exactly what happened. When Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the group in 2014 and 2015, their departures would mark one of the biggest moments in K-pop history. The three Chinese members decided to leave the hottest K-pop group and bank on themselves in starting a solo career back in China. They would fight a messy lawsuit with SM Entertainment to attain their freedom and get that wish to start anew in China. That bold decision paid off immediately. In just one year after their departures, the three former EXO members exploded in China. But EXO was no slouch either, continuing as nine members and reaching their apex in 2016, when they won five awards.
