Bara Perlawanan Warga Pulau Sangiang | Buka Mata

While the residents of Rempang Island in the Riau Islands recently came under scrutiny for facing eviction from their homes by the government in the name of investment, the residents of Sangiang Island also face a similar fate. They have been fighting for three decades to defend their ancestral land from eviction, legalized by the state in the name of tourism. The land they inhabit is planned to be turned into a tourist attraction. We visited Sangiang Island to hear the story of how the residents defended their ancestral land. The story begins in 1993, when the government, through the Ministry of Forestry, issued a Ministerial Decree changing the status of Sangiang Island from a Nature Reserve to a Nature Tourism Park. This change encompassed both land and water. Three years later, this decree was strengthened and accompanied by the issuance of a HGB (land use permit) for Sangiang Island to a private company. Since then, the mass exodus has continued, accompanied by intimidation and promises of financial compensation to entice the residents of Sangiang Island to leave. Worse still, in addition to the promises, residents are also terrorized by being sent pests, such as wild boars and venomous snakes. Some residents have also become victims of criminalization, accused of encroaching on private land. Now, amidst the threat of eviction, only a few families remain on Sangiang Island. They remain, guarding the ancestral land they have occupied for so long. (Narasi) Don't forget to subscribe, leave a comment, and share this video.
