시벨리우스 - 핀란디아 Op.26, “한 나라를 지켜낸 음악” Jean Sibelius - Finlandia, Op.26
Jean Sibelius’s masterpiece, Finlandia*, strongly exemplifies the characteristics of late Romantic Nordic music. The most significant feature of this piece is that it goes beyond a mere "patriotic atmosphere," creating a flow of emotion solely through changes in the orchestra's timbre. The low, heavy brass in the opening section is closer to a "repressed atmosphere" than to simple grandeur. In particular, the progression of the trombones and horns creates a cold tension characteristic of Northern Europe. *Finlandia does not explode with emotion from the start. It has a structure that begins in a dark mood, gradually opens up the melody, and leads to the hymn melody in the latter part. For this reason, it is best to listen by following the "changes in atmosphere" rather than the "melody." The most famous melody in the latter part was so beloved that it was later used as an independent hymn melody. The structure, in which the brass quietly supports the gentle progression of the strings, creates an emotion closer to "dignified hope" than a simple victory. While German Romanticism focused on the expression of strong emotions, Sibelius’s music places greater importance on nature, silence, and a sense of space. Therefore, Finlandia is less merely music to listen to and more an experience akin to walking through a cold landscape.
