Retirement Is A Lie

Retirement is a lie. Or at least it's a bet, and it's a worse bet than anyone tells you. We're told to work fifty years and save a chunk of it for the end. And that whole plan rests on the idea that you'll still be healthy when you get there, that you'll have anything left to enjoy it with, that you'll even still want it. Here's what I've watched happen. People give so much of themselves to the job that by the time retirement comes, they don't even want to leave. There's nothing else there. The job became the only place they had an identity. It didn't just take their time. It took their essence. They forgot the whole point. You take the job to eventually get free of it and live. But the job consumes the person before the freedom ever shows up. And the math keeps moving. Sixty five becomes sixty seven. Work till seventy if you want the full benefit. You plan your entire life around a finish line that keeps sliding away from you. Our parents came from a time where one job bought a house and fed a family. Same kind of hard work now just gets you by. We inherited the belief in retirement without inheriting the conditions that made it work. So maybe the better move isn't grinding fifty years for a payout you might not live to enjoy. Maybe it's building a life right now that doesn't need a finish line to be worth living.
