I Chose Digital. I Didn't Choose This.

Check out the full commentary playlist here:    • The Great Escape: Game Commentary   I love digital games but Sony and PlayStation moving further away from physical games is bad for consumer choice. The physical vs digital games debate is about more than collecting. It affects digital game ownership, used games, trade-ins, game preservation, pricing, and the future of the PlayStation ecosystem. My history with physical gaming goes all the way back to the early days of Nintendo. When the Nintendo Switch launched, I started building a physical collection again. Eventually, that collection began taking up too much space, and I knew there would always be the temptation to sell games that I might regret losing later. Digital games solved those problems for me. I could build a massive gaming library without filling my home with cases. My games were always available from one menu, and I no longer had to worry about selling part of my collection during a moment when I needed extra space or money. That is why I love digital gaming. But choosing digital for myself does not mean I want physical games taken away from everyone else. Physical games give players access to used copies, lower second hand prices, trade-ins, lending, collecting, and a level of ownership that digital licenses still do not provide. If the gaming industry expects players to accept an all-digital future, companies need to offer meaningful innovation in return. Why can’t we trade in digital games? Why can’t licenses be transferred or resold? Why are there not better game-sharing systems, stronger ownership protections, or official digital marketplaces for previously purchased games? Nintendo’s game-key cards are controversial, but they preserve a physical component that can still be traded or resold. Nintendo’s virtual game cards also provide more flexibility when moving digital games between systems. Microsoft has explored disc-to-digital options that attempt to recognize previous physical purchases. So where is Sony’s digital innovation? Why is PlayStation removing an option without providing players with something meaningful in return? I also acknowledge that I am part of the reason digital game sales continue to grow. I buy digital games because they work for me. But purchasing a game digitally is not a vote to eliminate physical media. I chose digital. I did not choose to have every other option taken away. Do you primarily buy physical games, digital games, or a mixture of both? What would Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, or other gaming companies need to improve before you would accept an all-digital future? #PlayStation #DigitalGames #PhysicalGames #GamePreservation #Gaming Search topics: Sony PlayStation, PlayStation physical games, Sony physical media, PlayStation digital games, Sony digital future, PlayStation all-digital future, Sony all-digital gaming, PlayStation physical media, PS5 physical games, PS5 digital games, PS5 disc drive, PlayStation disc games, PlayStation game discs, PlayStation digital ownership, PlayStation game licenses, Sony gaming strategy, PlayStation consumer choice, PlayStation game preservation, Sony game preservation, PlayStation used games, PlayStation trade-ins, PlayStation secondhand games, future of PlayStation, physical games, digital games, physical vs digital games, digital vs physical games, future of physical games, all-digital gaming, digital game ownership, physical game ownership, transferable game licenses, digital game trade-ins, digital game resale, used video games, second hand game market, game collecting, physical game collection, digital game library, video game preservation, consumer rights in gaming, death of physical games, physical media disappearing, Nintendo game-key cards, Nintendo virtual game cards, Microsoft disc-to-digital, Xbox disc-to-digital, future of gaming, gaming industry commentary, The Great Escape, Dungin Welcome to The Great Escape.
