Respiratory | Types of Hypoxia: Hypoxemic, Anemic, Stagnant, Histotoxic
Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this high-yield physiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy breaks down the Types of Hypoxia, focusing on the key mechanisms that impair oxygen delivery or utilization at the tissue level. This lecture helps you differentiate between the major categories of hypoxia and understand their clinical relevance. We begin with hypoxemic hypoxia, where there is a decreased arterial oxygen tension (PaO₂) due to causes like high altitude, V/Q mismatch, diffusion impairment, or shunt physiology. You’ll learn how this form of hypoxia is detected by a low PaO₂ and low SaO₂, often seen in respiratory diseases. Next, we cover anemic hypoxia, where oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced due to low hemoglobin concentration or the presence of dysfunctional hemoglobin (e.g., carbon monoxide poisoning). Despite normal PaO₂, tissues receive inadequate oxygen. We then explore stagnant (circulatory) hypoxia, where blood flow is reduced or uneven, impairing oxygen delivery despite normal oxygen content, commonly seen in heart failure, shock, or vascular obstruction.
