Sierra Leone Faces EU Pressure as Fugitive Drug Boss Case Escalates
According to a report by the Financial Times, the Dutch government is urging the European Union to consider suspending development aid to Sierra Leone unless the country extradites Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, one of Europe's most wanted drug traffickers. Dutch authorities allege Leijdekkers has been living in Sierra Leone despite being sentenced to 24 years in prison for major cocaine trafficking offences. Sierra Leone has not confirmed his presence but says it remains committed to due process and international legal cooperation. The report says the proposal has intensified debate over whether development aid should be used as leverage in international law enforcement and foreign policy.
