Yukio Goto (85) lost his mother in the Great Nagoya Air Raid of March 1945, leaving him and his younger brother as war orphans. They struggled to survive, eating donuts in train station waiting rooms and receiving gum from the occupying forces. At the time, they slept at Nagoya Station or at a shrine on the west side of the station, but when they visited the shrine this year, 75 years later, they found that it had been almost completely demolished due to relocation for construction of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. As time passes, items from that time are disappearing one after another. Katsumi Hashimoto (84) became a war orphan across the ocean in China. In 1941, when the Pacific War began, he and his family crossed the ocean as part of the "Manchuria-Mongolia Pioneer Group," where they lived through harsh times. They lived in winter, with temperatures ranging from -30 to -40 degrees Celsius, and in constant fear of a Soviet invasion. After the war ended, the family attempted to escape, walking 200 kilometers to Japan. However, when he finally arrived in the city, all of his family members except for him died of typhus, leaving him alone to travel to Japan. 75 years have passed since then.
