What is the Metroidvania?

Let's looks at the origins of the Metroidvania, from the NES era with the original Metroid and Castlevania games and up until recent releases like Hollow Knight: Silksong. After that, I give some thoughts on what different conventions describe most Metroidvanias available on the market today.
