The traditional Sanjo Festival in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, is held every May as the spring festival of Hachiman Shrine. The Daimyo Procession is said to have begun in 1822 to celebrate the appointment of Murakami Domain lord Naito Nobuatsu as Kyoto Shoshidai. Many parents carry their children on their shoulders during the Maiikomi procession, when the procession group returns to Hachiman Shrine, praying for their children's healthy growth.
